There is a lot more to selecting the right floor than just choosing the colour or design.  The floor will have to work harder than any other surface in your home.  Not only will it have to look great and cope with daily wear and tear - it will also have to be safe, provide comfort and act as a heat/sound insulator - as well as meeting your budget.

There is a huge selection of floor coverings available in many colours and designs.  Advances in modern technology has meant that many types are now multi-purpose, although it is worth taking a little extra time to ensure the floor you want - is actually the floor you need.

Carpet is the UK's favourite floor covering and can be found in 97% of homes.  There's no other flooring that offers such a wide choice of styles, patterns and colours.  The right carpet can also make a cramped room appear bigger or add a feeling of cosiness to a larger room.  Carpet is Number 1 for making a home feel warm in the winter and there's nothing quite like losing your toes in a luxurious Saxony as you step out of bed.  Modern technology has meant hard wearing carpets are now better priced than ever before, and you are able to find a product to suit the length of term you want.

Whether you choose to invest in solid wood or a less expensive laminate, wood flooring has a classic, timeless appeal, and the range of colours and styles makes it a popular choice.  But, like many carpets, a higher price usually means better quality, so buy the best you can afford. Unlike carpets cheaper wood floors have proved to be a false economy and have performed very badly with many failing because the product was poor or in many cases because the quality of fitting was poor.

Vinyl makes a great low-maintenance floor.  It can be used in any room because there is a thickness and texture to suit any purpose.  As well as plain and patterned designs, there are vinyl's that emulate a variety of hard materials, and are worth considering when the real thing would be impractical or too expensive.
